Soka Gakkai members in the Tohoku region of Japan are marking the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. On March 7, some 10,000 members participated in a commemorative general meeting in person and online. Held at the Tohoku Culture Center, the event was broadcast live to 147 venues across the region. President Daisaku Ikeda sent a congratulatory message. On the same day, the organization launched an exhibition to show the experiences of members who have persevered against all odds since the earthquake, as well as the voices of those who shared words of encouragement. On March 9, the Soka Gakkai’s Seikyo Shimbun newspaper announced that the culture center in Futaba, close to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, has reopened after renovation and that a new Kamaishi Culture Center will be built in Iwate Prefecture in 2022.
