On February 17, the Nagasaki Peace Lecture, organized by the “A World without Nuclear Weapons-Beyond the Rainbow Project,” supported by the Soka Gakkai Nagasaki Peace Committee and other groups, was held at the Dejima Messe Nagasaki convention center. Ambassador of South Africa to Japan Lulama Smuts Ngonyama delivered a lecture titled “A New Vision for Peace: South Africa’s Role in Achieving a World Free of Nuclear Weapons, Multiculturalism, and Harmonious Coexistence.” He described South Africa’s unique decision to end its nuclear weapons program and its path from apartheid to democracy. He also expressed his determination to further promote peace by following the examples of individuals such as former South African President Nelson Mandela and President Daisaku Ikeda, who embody the spirit of “ubuntu,” an African concept emphasizing compassion for others.
